PSM Stamp Fair: Wrap-up and Loot

The stamp fair organized by Philatelic Society Malaysia (PSM) that was held on 10th and 11th December 2022 is a great way to transition to 2023 with a lighter wallet. At the usual spot, the Petaling Jaya Community Library once again becomes an assembly ground for people of all ages with a similar mindset: stamp hunting.

It is the second stamp fair held this year in conjunction with PSM's 75th Anniversary. The first was held earlier in September.

Pos Malaysia also participated with a Stamp Week program.

Here is a short wrap-up of the stamp fair:

Visible upon entering the library's main gate, Stamp Week buntings erected by Pos Malaysia.

The entrance to the hall where the stamp fair was held.

Line quickly forms at Pos Malaysia's booth. Patrons here to get the latest stamp issue but a better tip by KY Shum (not in picture) was to queue at the other side of the booth to get the limited miniature sheets overprinted with PSM's 75 anniversary logo.

Pos Malaysia's staff were efficient to arrange chairs for us to sit while waiting for our turn.

At the other side of the Pos Malaysia's booth, stamps from previous issues still present in sheets. Buying full sheets at face value - what's not to love!

After buying stamps and covers, it is time to slowly stick on the stamps. Feels great to be able to sit down, chat with friends while making first day covers.

Pictorial cachets. Initially there were only 3 cachets on the first day (10 Dec 2022), and 2 more cachets on the second (11 Dec 2022) that bears the location: 'Perpustakaan Komuniti Petaling Jaya' (Petaling Jaya Community Library). Later in the afternoon, the first day cachet meant for Kuala Lumpur's philatelic bureau were brought in, making it 4 on day 1. On day 2, you could get all 6!

Lucky draw! This is me running to the lucky draw box since I have essentially lost track of time looking at stamps offered by dealers.

Got my fair share of luck

Fair share of luck also comes with a fair share of damage to my wallet, the flexibility to accept bank transfers on the spot did not help at all!

Here's what I bought:

Credits to a fellow first day cover enthusiast, Mr Peng Jian Chan for giving this blank envelope to make this possible.

Binatang, Sarawak postmark

A shy Tanjung Aru cds

Tied with Lahad Datu/ Sabah cds

Front side of the cover featuring a beautiful Beaufort/ Sabah Malaysia cds

But what piqued my interest is the faint 'CANCELLED' linotype spotted on this block of 6. Any idea on what it is?

QE II Coronation cover. Singapore stamps tied with an interesting 'COCOS ISLAND' cds.

Now onto stamps, a 1c (perf 12.5) with a shy Train Mail cds while the rest of the 15c stamps were offered at RM1/piece.
Various postmarks of Johor, on paper.

Suffice to say, I am way over my set budget.
To top it off, I registered myself as a PSM member.

Spending aside, it is always great to see fellow friends who enjoy the hobby as much gather under one roof. That said, I am looking forward to the next stamp fair in 2023.
