Sabah Registered Mail with missing A in KINAB_LU cds

Here's a good find that has been sitting in the bought-but-not-sorted pile.

A letter franked with a block of six 20c stamp tied with LAHAD DATU/SABAH single ring c.d.s. dated 20NOV87 sent to Kuala Lumpur. There is a faint rectangular box cancel 'LAHAD DATU' in violet in the bottom of the letter. Although this was a commercial registered mail, you have got to appreciate the clear cancel strike.


Rates: 20c for surface mail within 20g + $1.00 for registration fee.

It gets interesting on the back of envelope - multiple transit postal markings.

KEPONG/ KUALA LUMPUR - 24 NOV 87


If examined closely, you will notice that KINABALU is missing the letter 'A'.


What could have caused the missing alphabet?

The 1909-1922 series of North Borneo stamps featured intricate and beautifully engraved subjects. Interesting enough, the 18c stamp that featured a banteng (Tembadau in the local language) were withdrawn in the same month that it was issued for provisional use. Why, you ask? There were simply no postal requirements for it.  Left: 1909 (July), 18c, ISC#151 Right: 1909 (September), 18c surcharged with 20c, ISC#153 "It is believed that 50,000 18c stamps were printed and of these 5,000 had been sold, 5,000 were retained at Sandakan, and 40,000 were returned to London" [1]. Perforations: A note on Kampf and APS perforation types

Perforations are holes punched between stamps to ease separation. Apart from its prime purpose, perforations exist in different shapes, which are made such to further counter irresponsible efforts of forging stamps. Varieties in perforation are commonly due to a change of the perforation gauges in the production process, change in manufacturer of the perforating equipment, and even the use of faulty perforation pins.  "The punch sets used on the perforating machines were subject to powerful forces. This factor, allied to the design problem experienced in the first two years of operation made breakages inevitable." Interesting cancellations on North Borneo stamps (1)

For time being, these cancellations on North Borneo stamps remain a mystery to me. It is a first for me to come across an oval handstamp, this reminds me of Jamaica's cog-wheeled TRD and some of the security markings used by Chartered Bank of India, Australia, & China. Visible 'C'  Upon some 'Google-ing' and drawing reference from Michel Houde's extensive website , it does look like Chin Ho & Co, Singapore however it is impossible to conclude anything from just one visible alphabet.  Next is this piece, a single ring oval handstamp with 'B. P. / PAGAT..' as the visible half on the stamp. I uploaded this piece on a Facebook group of North Borneo stamps enthusiasts hoping to find an answer too.
