1961 North Borneo One Cent Varieties

Not reported in the ISC catalogue but there are three known (so far, hopefully there's more) varieties in the 1961 definitive series.

The 1 cent stamp that features the Sambar stag, locally known as 'Payau' has a dot flaw at position R3/3 described as a dot flaw in the letter 'R' of BORNEO.

Another denomination with an interesting variation is the 10c stamp with a line break seen next to Mindanao. This, however, I am unsure whether it is a constant flaw seen.

Fugitive Ink: Don't soak the purple ones!

The conventional method of removing stamps off paper is by soaking in lukewarm water. However, there are certain stamps that should stay far from the soak-in-a-bulk technique especially those that were printed with fugitive ink .  Fugitive ink wash off when exposed to water or any organic solvent such as spirits, which will stain the stamps and other unlucky stamps too that soaking together. Thomas De La Rue & Co., a firm based in London is quite well-known in terms of the usage of fugitive inks especially shades of purple to magenta and green. The nature of fugitive ink, I believe, is solely to combat the issue of reusing stamps by removal of postmarks. From all the gentle scrubbing while removing postmarks, one could potentially smudge the entire stamp in purple or green. With that, it is important to have knowledge of which printing firm responsible for any said stamp prior to soaking. Malaya BMA $5 - Gash at eyebrow plate flaw

While arranging my Malaya BMA album, it occurred to me to look for the dot on neckline plate flaw since I have a few. To my surprise, I did not find any of the flaw that I am looking for but discovered that I did have one with the gash at eyebrow plate flaw on this block of $5 stamp. Try looking for the gash at eyebrow Initially, I bought this block for the clear security marking strike, Netherlands Trading Society/ Penang. Turns out I found something even better!  This is the enlarged scan showing the gash at eyebrow This plate flaw is located at position R5/1. With this find, I better go back to flipping the album once more!

North Borneo 20c on 18c: Through Thick and Thin

The 1909-1922 series of North Borneo stamps featured intricate and beautifully engraved subjects. Interesting enough, the 18c stamp that featured a banteng (Tembadau in the local language) were withdrawn in the same month that it was issued for provisional use. Why, you ask? There were simply no postal requirements for it.  Left: 1909 (July), 18c, ISC#151 Right: 1909 (September), 18c surcharged with 20c, ISC#153 "It is believed that 50,000 18c stamps were printed and of these 5,000 had been sold, 5,000 were retained at Sandakan, and 40,000 were returned to London" [1]. The numbers here speak for scarcity of mint and postally used 18c stamps. Defaced 18c stamps are usually CTOs.
